Shellfish


An aquatic animal that is an invertebrate with an exoskeleton.  Shellfish can be an oyster, mussel, clam, crab, lobster and shrimp.

  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration offers the following aid to consumers for identifying the types of 1,500 fin fish and shellfish (printed versions are no longer available.)

A note about iodine. Some have expressed a concern that they cannot eat shellfish due to iodine.  Iodine is necessary for normal brain functions:


Iodine is not made by the body, nor is it a protein or hormone. Iodine is an element (atom), like carbon and oxygen. In its pure form it is a purple crystal that evaporates when exposed to air.

Iodine is extracted by the body from food. When people used to get goiter years ago, it was because their diet was deficient in iodine. Iodine is in seafood, so goiter was normally only found in people who did not eat seafood. Now iodine is added to table salt, which largely solves the goiter problem.

Iodine is contained in the purple antiseptic that you can buy in the pharmacy ("iodine"). It is contained in the brownish stuff that is painted on the skin prior to surgery. (Submitted by Physicist Louis W. Adams, Ph.D.)
