Families With Food Allergies was pleased to receive free samples of Sunbutter and Trailmix products for support group members and sponsorship to Spooky Ooky 2007.

These products were from SunGold Foods, a Division of Red River Commodities, Inc. They have provided the following helpful clues to reading labels along with their product information:

Sunbuddy says…No Peanuts? Still Cool!

What to know about peanut and nut allergies:

Making safe food choices can be one of the most difficult aspects of dealing with peanut allergies. Read labels completely and avoid products that have ingredients that might pose a risk. There are obvious ingredients to avoid such as ground or mixed nuts, beer nuts, cold pressed peanut oil, and peanut butter.

Peanut protein can also be "hidden" in the labels of some products. Be wary of ingredients such as hydrolyzed plant protein, vegetable oil or protein, and natural flavorings. Non-food products also pose risks. Carefully examine ingredient labels of products such as dishwashing, hand and laundry soaps, shampoos, lotions, shaving creams and cosmetics.

Don’t be misled by product names. For example, a "peach-scented" or "cucumber and melon" skin product can also include oils derived from peanuts or nuts. Learn to recognize uncommon names for ingredients that you need to a void. For example, almond oil may also be listed as Prunus-amygdalus oil; Arachis oil is another word used to denote peanut oil.

These few examples are by no means a complete list. Consult your doctor.

SunGold SUNBUTTERtm is made from sunflowers and contains no peanuts or tree nuts. SunGold SUNBUTTERtm is made in a peanut- and tree nut-free facility on equipment that has never processed peanuts or tree nuts. As an added measure of safety, SunGold Foods tests every lot (batch) of SunGold SUNBUTTERtm. SunGold Foods is committed to manufacturing SUNBUTTERtm with the concerns of peanut allergy patients in mind. That means that people who can’t risk exposing themselves or a family member to peanut or tree nut products now have a tasty and safe alternative.

SunGold SUNBUTTERtm is made in the northern region of the country where peanuts can’t grow, further reducing the risk of cross-contamination. Every batch of SUNBUTTERtm is tested for the presence of peanuts using the Neogen ALERT® test which can detect peanut contamination at 5 parts per million.
SunGold SUNBUTTERtm was co-developed by USDA food scientists partly to address the growing peanut allergy problem. Sunflower is not a top eight allergen. Peanuts and tree nuts are in the top eight which cause 90% of all food allergy reactions. Over 3 million people are now allergic to peanuts, tree nuts or both. Many families are struggling to find tasty, but safe solutions to food choice concerns.
SunGold SUNBUTTERtm delivers more than peace of mind. Taste trials on daycare children found that 48% "definitely" preferred SUNBUTTERtm over peanut butter. What’s more, it’s better for them.
The secret is in those seeds. They give SunGold SUNBUTTERtm a whopping 27% of the adult requirement for vitamin E in each delicious serving. Plus, the same amount of protein as peanut butter without the allergy worries. And, because it’s made from more nutritious sunflower seeks, SunGold SUNBUTTERtm has double the fiber, double the zinc, almost triple the iron, a third less saturated fat and even less sodium.

If you or someone you know suffer from a peanut or nut allergy SunGold SUNBUTTERtm was made for you. It tastes great and is made without peanuts or nuts and it’s manufactured with the care your peanut allergy concerns deserve.
